Weekend Ski Activities February 2, 2010

(notes from Ross)

There is a scheduled X-C ski clinic on Saturday (6 Feb) afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 at Beech Hill Park. If anyone is interested in helping with this by escorting people around some of the trails, helping people get boots and skis on or giving basic ski advice (how to fall and get up being perhaps the most useful) please let Ross know. You certainly don’t have to be there for the whole time. So far Peter M and Ross T are planning to be there. Also if you know people who want a few tips or to try on a set of skis ( assuming the town is bringing some extra skis as they did last year) you can send them along.

-

Even more exciting, we are going to have a Time Trial around the Crooked Tree Trail on Sunday (7 Feb) afternoon. This will start at 1:30 from the Ski Cabin (aka Das Rosshaus) and will involve people leaving one at a time every one to two minutes (Ross is working out the details), with faster skiers leaving first. We won’t close the trail-just ask that when you hear someone breathing down your neck or yelling “track” you step aside to let faster skiers pass. We haven’t decided on an entry fee but it will almost certainly be free. There may be prizes but no guarantees. Everyone is welcome whether it takes you 10 minutes 37 seconds, or sixty minutes. Register before 1:30 PM.

-

There is a blurb up on the wall of the cabin on stove operation if you have been wanting to start it or stoke it but were unsure what to do. There is a need for dry firewood – if you have a few sticks to spare you could leave them in my garage (26 Squire) or at the start of the trail by the Reservoir gate in a plastic bag and we will eventually haul it in – or leave it at the cabin.

-

Skiing is great although unfortunately not groomed since last snow. Todd Cole is trying to remedy this.

Potluck Supper 21 Feb 09 February 16, 2009

Filed under: Activities, Skiing — Harold Jarche @ 9:52 am

The potluck will be this coming Saturday evening, the 21st of February, at 5:30 p.m at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church Hall on Main Street across from the swan pond. Potluck

Again if you have gear to swap, sell or give away bring it along. There are a few people looking for kids stuff so it would be really nice to bring any unwanted children’s equipment along.

Graham’s notes on Sunday’s Ski February 15, 2009

Wonderful skiing in Sackville today. As I made my way toward the pond I heard the clatter of approaching skiers and soon saw a haggard bunch resembling Shackleton’s men reaching Elephant Island, all sweat and happiness. They’d been to Memramcook.

Rob

Peter Manchester, Ross Thomas, and assorted other nimrods of the TOC. Saw many others on the trail on the way back to the Crooked Tree, which was in superb condition and red Swix, carefully corked smooth seemed to be the wax of the day, especially over an ironed-on binder. At my sarcopenic age I need all the physics and chemistry available. All these trails beginning near the reservoir gates as well as the newly manicured Beech Hill are worthy, in my view, of a single explanatory name. Something TOC and the town can promote and which will bring more people here to ski. Comments and name suggestions please. Might be fun at the pot luck. My suggestion Tantramar Winter Centre or Sackville Winter Centre.

Conditions on Monday, Feb 2, 2009 February 2, 2009

Filed under: Ski Conditions, Skiing — Harold Jarche @ 1:43 pm

From Sandy Burnett:

Just got in from an hour of peak skiing. Followed tracks about half-way round Twisted Creek (aka Watergate!) till I reached the point where the trailblazers had given up on the labor of breaking crust. I had no more ambition for it than they did and followed their example by taking the short cut back to the woods road (newly groomed for snowmobiles and fabulous for skate skiing) and across to the TCH service road and a bit of the Blue North before cutting back to the Crooked Tree circuit and out.

Conditions were ideal. Brett Beale has done an outstanding job in widening the trail in a few places to make room for the new groomer and trail setter. What a difference! Hats off to Graham Watt, Ross Thomas, Harold Jarche, Peter Manchester and everyone else who lent their support to the Town’s purchase of the new equipment, and to Brett for his initiative in using it effectively to make our skiing sooo much better than in previous years.

We’ll have a short Disc Golf course set up too! This sport is played with Frisbees and baskets and tons of fun in the summer or winter! Fly down Beech Hill, challenge friends to a game of golf, warm up with some hot chocolate or relax on a sleigh ride this afternoon and celebrate winter!

This is a great opportunity to get out and try a new winter sport! There will be a limited number of skis available to try for a donation to TRHS and Salem phys ed programs. During the afternoon take in a Skiing Clinic and tours of Beech Hill Trails. All are welcome!

GroomingMeetingMinutes 26thJanuary,2009 January 28, 2009

Grooming meeting 26Jan,2008 Ross, Graham, Peter M, Ian D, Harold J

  1. Brief discussion re the club purchasing and operating snowmobile. Graham , Ian and possibly Cy Bernard as potential groomers, Paul Chamberland as a possible tech support. Decided that this would be a long term goal-next year at the absolute earliest. First we should exhaust the possibility of improving the work Brett does by first deciding what our priorities are , communicating them to Todd, and trying to work out a direct relationship with Brett. It was decided Graham Watt would be the liaison as this would keep communications simpler. If we are not able to get what we think is a reasonable grooming level we would relook at doing it ourselves. This could be a lot more work and expense, even if we got a grant from the Town.

Graham also discussed the benefits of using the new Trackor Groomer to groom level walking paths in the waterfowl park.

2.Grooming Priorities:

-We feel grooming should be done within 24 hours after fresh snowfalls and every 3-5 days otherwise to freshen up the trails.

-We felt Beech Hill Park itself should be the priority for grooming. We will propose that a figure of eight loop around the now unploughed road loop, around the outside of the field within the park and back up to the main road via the serpentine trail which presently has a stop sign to the main trail should be groomed for both skating and classical skiing. This would allow walking on the skating track.

Besides this we felt an additional classic loop inside the field would be an asset.

-Presently the Red loop is quite curving, bumpy and crisscrossed by a new ATV trail several times. This part of the trail is all on private land and subject to non pedestrian use and the committee felt there were potential safety issues. If there are time or financial constraints we would propose this be the lowest priority for grooming.

-We would like to see the Beech Hill blue trail be groomed, even though it is largely outside park boundaries.

-We would like to see the Crooked Tree Trail continue to be groomed.

-It was felt that for this year the Twisted Creek Trail was not appropriate to groom because of narrow and wet sections.

-We will propose that any hills(the “Caution” hill, and hill coming into the “fields with a view”on the Beech Hill Blue, and the hill 200 m before the Crookd Tree and the CyRoy hill before the bridge at the end/start of the CTT) be groomed with the corduroy part of the groomer, not the grooves to allow snowploughing down or duck walking up. Less fun/more safety.

-It was felt there should be a review of signage with perhaps names or at least degree of difficulty designations for the Beech Hill trails, new maps, snowshoe trail signs(these trails do exist!), and pictoral signage about walking on ski tracks-i.e it is OK to walk on the pole track but preferably not on or in the grooves. This won’t happen until the summer.

  1. Brief discussion about the Cross Country ski “open house/try some skis” session which is set to take place Saturday afternoon, February 7th as part of Winterfest-likely around 1 or 2 p.m.. We will encourage TOC members to come out to help show novices how to put skis on, show them around and some technique tips. We will do a mail out closer to the event.

There was also a proposal that Brett be asked to groom 3 or 4 classic tracks down and across the big field to be used for sprint races. Some of those involved in this proposal suggested they would be winning this event but there was no consensus nor bets placed. This event will take place at ~3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
