Sydney’s return September 17, 2009

Filed under: Activities, Cycling — Harold Jarche @ 9:59 pm

From Doug, proud father and husband:

This is to let you know that after 78 days on the road that the nomad Sydney arrived home today around one o’clock in the afternoon. She traveled 5,445 km had only one flat and wore out two sets of tires. Diane who joined her just outside Montreal did the last 1,200 km home to Sackville. Both are in high spirits and in great shape.

Joggins Cycling Tour September 16, 2009

Filed under: Activities, Cycling — Harold Jarche @ 9:44 am

Melissa Grey is the newly appointed Science & Education Coordinator at the Joggins Fossil Centre. Following some discussions on our Sunday morning rides, Melissa has been looking into routes for biking to Joggins this Fall. The Centre closes at the end of October.

Melissa usually goes straight from Maccan (there’s a fairly large pull out just before the #242 to park cars) to Joggins – a 19km ride one-way. Most of the road is freshly paved and nice to ride. Longer rides from Maccan could include Lower Maccan – River Hebert – Minudie – Joggins (about 44km 1 way) or Maccan – River Hebert – Minudie – Joggins (38km 1 way). There are lots of options. Going through Minudie would be lovely.

So, if a group of cyclists would like to stop in at the Centre, they have toilets, a cafe, and a water fountain. Melissa can also coordinate a special group rate ($5 per person) to people who’d like to check out the gallery. The scenery is really quite lovely here and they have picnic tables outside for people to use and enjoy the view.

If you’re interested in doing a group either to Joggins, Sackville-Joggins return, or a ride from and returning to the Centre, please add your comments below. Put in your preferred dates or day of the week.

Cycling Ladies September 15, 2009

I was on a recuperation ride from our 200 km Cyclebetes event last Saturday (pictures here) and came across a young lady cycling from Boston to Chicago, via the Maritimes. Priscilla has finished her tour of Nova Scotia and PEI and is on her way West. Her friend is keeping a blog about Priscilla’s adventures called Amazing Priscilla goes on a very long bike ride. Priscilla also had a very cool rear view mirror, called the Beer View Mirror, made from a spoke and a bottle cap.

Here she is near Dorchester:

Meanwhile, Sydney and Diane continue the final leg of Sydney’s cross Canada trip (near Oromocto last night):

Sunday Morning Bike Rides April 9, 2009

Filed under: Cycling — Harold Jarche @ 1:27 pm

The Sunday morning road bike gang is back at it this year. Rides start at Sackville’s Bridge Street Café at 10:00 AM Sunday mornings. Come early and get a jolt of espresso before hitting the road.

sunday ride

These are social rides, not races, and are open to anyone with a road bike. We usually do between 30 and 50 km and perhaps longer as the season progresses. The pace is decided by whomever shows up, but dropping riders off-the-back is a social faux pas.

Biker returns to Sackville October 13, 2008

Dan Aurell flew to Vancouver this Summer and has been working his way back to Sackville by bike. His journey has taken him across the US and Canada and Dan has shared some of his experiences on his blog, Dan’s Adventures.

A number of local cyclists, including his dad, met up with Dan to join him for his final 25 km into Sackville, where he was met by a bunch of his friends at the Bridge Street Cafe.
